Whew - what a day it has been - and the show hasn't even opened yet! Miles of aisles are being transformed from vacant mega-buildings to trucking mecca. The Show opens in the morning and you'd think it was impossible to turn this mess into an Event. But I know better. It happens every year this way.
Saw a really cool truck parked in front of the South Wing. It's the Back on the Road ride, donated by the folks at Arrow Trucks - a dressed up Volvo VN660 - and it will be given to a fortunate recipient whose been down on his luck. Among the generous sponsors, OOIDA is donating a year's insurance and HeartLand Express is giving the driver a lease -and the opportunity to get back on his feet.
Owner operator Les Sullivan shared a great story with me yesterday. He's been corresponding with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. He heard an interview that Thomas did last fall. When Thomas was asked what he'd have done if he hadn't become a jurist, he said he would have liked to be a truck driver. Sullivan, whose truck is featured on the 2008 Shell SuperRigs calendar decided to get in touch. So he mailed him a calendar and a note. He not only received a phone call from Justice Thomas, but the two have been corresponding via email since then. You just never know what can happen when you reach out to someone!
Tomorrow is another day...stay tuned.
